The Blue Horizon Jazz Band

Stan & Ellen McDonald introduced Classic Jazz to the Sherborn Inn 15 years ago. Thankfully, it continues every Tuesday to this day, showcasing fine Traditional & Dixieland Jazz and Swing.  The Blue Horizon Jazz Band plays regularly on the 3rd Tuesday of every month.  Members are Stan McDonald leader/soprano sax & clarinet, Jeff Stout trumpet, Gerry Gagnon trombone, Ross Petot piano, Peter Gerler guitar, Al Ehrenfried acoustic string bass, and Dave Bragdon drums.

Stan has always had a penchant for surrounding himself with the finest musicians. This talented group straightaway set the mood with the oldest published blues, W. C. Handy's Memphis Blues, Jeff's trumpet taking the lead and Stan in counterpoint on soprano sax, cleverly playing off each other, holding the fort because Gerry had been detained.

Stan was playing inspiring solos on soprano sax and clarinet, and sang many vocals, All By Myself, Make Me a Pallet on the Floor, and more. Ross's fingers rippled up and down the keyboard on Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None of My Jelly Roll,   Dave's drums keeping impeccable time, Al Ehrenfried's string bass embellishing the melody, with Gerler and the group in stop-chorus behind him.

They introduced Four or Five Times, as Gerry slipped in the back door and fell right in.  His trombone does make a difference, rounding off the Traditional Jazz front line.  They let the drums loose on this one, and Dave had a chance to exhibit his incredible technique.

Georgia, Darktown Strutter's Ball, Buddy Bolden Blues, Tijuana.  Distinctive Trad melodies.   Petite chanteuse Mollie Malone was in the audience, and joined them for a sweet He's Funny That Way

Ross exploded at the break with a high-powered rendition of They Can't Take That Away From Me. Trumpet and trombone performed a fierce, fiery duet on  Good Old New York.  Fan's heads were bobbing and weaving, feet tapping in time with the exciting rhythms, never a dull minute.

A young couple from the Sherborn Inn's renowned dining room was passing by.  Astounded by the HOT music they were hearing, they grabbed chairs and joined the 'regular' listening crowd.  This is one way they get to hear our kind of music -  ignored by today's disingenuous media.  We have some new, young faces!

There is great LIVE New Orleans Tradtional/Dixieland Jazz every Tuesday at the Sherborn Inn.  Stan McDonald's  Blue Horizon Jazz Band continues to share it's passion with us, in its 15th year, on October 19th. See you there!
