Dan Gabel's High Society Orchestra

at the Sherborn Inn, February 5, 2013

The High Society Orchestra

After a successful debut at the Acacia Indian Meadows in Westborough, Massachusetts, Dan Gabel and the Abletones will be performing on the first Friday of every month starting March 1st.  Local Swing dancers are really excited!

When he began talking with his friends about Dorsey, Teagarden, Goodman, and Miller, and they had no clue who these people were, he decided to make a band that would help keep alive the sound of the great sounds of Jazz, Ragtime, and Swing.  Now he has several bands, and is determined to keep the music alive.

This High Society Orchestra consisted of many of his fellow students at the New England Conservatory of Music and Berklee College of Music  playing historically correct, original arrangements. The Charleston. Chicago and New York. 1927. The Jazz Age. These are the images this 10-piece ensemble calls to mind as it stomps through known and rare tunes.

The personnel on February 5th were:

Saxes: Will Bridges, lead alto, clarinet, soprano
Billy McShane: alto, clarinet, soprano, bari sax
Tyler Burchfield: tenor, clarinet, soprano

Trumpets: Dave Burdette, Kai Sandoval

Rhythm:
Banjo and Guitar: Bill Doyle
Piano: Nikolas Anadolis
Tuba: Rick MacWilliams
Drums: Steve Taddeo

Leader Dan Gabel began playing the trombone at age 10, learning to play on his Dad’s 1960's era King 2-B, that he still plays today.

The Orchestra was completely immersed in  the old tunes, Whispering, The Charleston, Alexander’s Ragtime Band - with Dan evoking fond memories by singing with a megaphone.

Paul Whitman’s hit, Three Little Words.   Angry, especially for his friend Jen. Duke’s Sophisticated Lady, Write Myself a Letter,  Deed I Do.

Pianist extraordinaire this evening was from Greece, Nikolas Anadolis.

Nikolas attended music academies in Greece.

He applied to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he received a full International Presidential Scholarship.

Black and Tan Fantasy was written by Duke Ellington and Bubber Miley.  The Orchestra did an impressive arrangement by Bill Challis that Duke played at the Cotton Club with Miley and Tricky Sam Nanton. They took it out with a thunderous finish.

Dan's trombone was the roaring tiger in Tiger Rag, originally recorded and copyrighted by the Original Dixieland Jass Band in 1917.  It is one of the most recorded jazz compositions of all time.

They played all the good old tunes. The first published arrangement of You Were Meant For Me was in 1942, What’ll I Do? was composed by Irving Berlin in 1923, Paul Whitman's Happy Feet 1930.

The High Society Orchestra is just one of Dan's endeavors.
Dan Gable is whole heartedly into his music and is determined to make the Big Band Era come alive again.

To preserve and perpetuate it for years to come, he and Amanda Carr have created the American Big Band Preservation Society.

Dan Gable and the Abletones, the full 17-piece Big Band, will be playing at the First Friday Swing Dance at the Acacia Indian Meadows Country Club, 275 Turnpike Rd. (Rte. 9) Westborough on Friday, March 1st at 7:30pm.  (Behind the Nissan Dealer.) Hope to see you there! Bring your dancing shoes.
