Popular Classic Bass Player Recipient of "Satchmo Award"

Bassist John Lamb, who has performed at the Suncoast Jazz Classic for a number of years with his own All-Star band and with Rose Bilal, will be honored by the Jazz Club of Sarasota as the recipient of the prestigious "Satchmo Award" at Sarasota's 33rd Annual Jazz Festival on March 7.
The coveted award was created as a tribute to the life and legacy of Louis Armstrong and his passion for jazz and excellence matched only by his joyous love of life and children.   It is presented each year to an outstanding jazz musician performing at the festival.
John was selected to receive the award for his contribution to the world of jazz, locally and internationally, including education.  The award trophy was designed by Frank Eliscu who designed the Heisman Trophy.  Previous recipients include Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Jerry Mulligan, Lionel Hampton and other prominent music-world icons.
John's extensive and impressive musical career includes playing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra for three years before returning to St. Petersburg in 1967 to teach for 30 years in the Pinellas County School System.  Since retiring he has led the Original All-Stars, played at the Suncoast Jazz Classic and with the popular Nate Najar Jazz Trio.
In addition to the award at the Festival, John will be performing with drummer Patricia Dean and pianist Marc Chrupcala in supporting the internationally renowned jazz vocalist Giacomo Gates.  For tickets/festival information, click on:

Vote For "Hoppi" The Classic's Newest Friend

Sheraton Marketing VP Jack Guy and his wife Wanda recently adopted a special needs dog now named Hoppi, who was born to an unscrupulous breeder who kept her in a small container for her first 14 months of life.   As a result, she suffered untold abuses that resulted in a badly mangled broken back and she could hardly walk
According to the Guys, little Hoppi is now getting around wonderfully, despite her handicap. "She is happy beyond anything we have ever seen before and the biggest thrill in her short life is when she goes for a walk.  She still struggles as she gets around but you can now detect there is joy in her new life."
But Hoppi now needs your help.  Hoppi has been entered in an Animal Planet sponsored contest to become the "Luckiest Pet." As a winner, a $5,000 donation will be made to the animal rescue center at Ruskin from which Hoppi was adopted.
So the Guys hope you'll vote for Hoppi (and you can vote every day) and ask your friends, family and neighbors to vote so Hoppi can help her other abandoned friends in the rescue center.  Click on:
http://www.petfinder.com/luckiestpetcontest/.  Go to Hoppi's photo and enter your vote for her in the search line.  Hopefully, you may get to see her roaming the Sheraton halls during the Classic in November.
