To celebrate our
fifteenth year in the mines we are releasing this, the first
live recording since our first, way back in 1998! Recorded in
October 2009 at the University of New Hampshire, this concert shows
us off at something like a peak -- after several years of regular
festivals and concert appearances we decided it was time to get out
of the studio and capture some of the energy that exists when
playing for an audience. With one exception ("St. James
Infirmary",) all of these tunes can be found on previous WJB disks,
although several are on Goes To Pieces, which is currently out of
print. The sum total of the concert is included here, except for two
tracks with technical problems and two that made their way onto our
previous CD, High Society. In 1995 when we did our first gig we
were known as the Paragons of Virtue and were to have been an
offshoot of the Paramount Jazz Band. Cooler heads soon
prevailed and we became the Wolverines, although not until after a
short stint as the Yankee Clippers (which turned out to have been
the name of a folk band in the area.) The initial personnel
was a bit different back then -- Jeff, Rick and Dave were all
original members (Jimmy was on the first gig, but wasn't a regular
for a few years.) The current lineup has been in place since
1999 and it's a tribute to the infrequency of our gigs that we are
all still speaking to (and eating with) each other. My thanks
to all of my cohorts for putting up with me through my developmental
stage, which I will hopefully be graduating from soon. Also
thanks to our regular subs -- Dave Whitney, Scott Philbrick, Noel
Kaletsky, Craig Ball, Robin Verdier, Henry "thins" Francis, Bob
Sundstrom, Bob Barta, Al Bernard, Justin Meyer, Reid Jorgenson and
Steve Taddeo for their help over the years. A final
indispensable member of the Wolverine family is Peter Kontrimas, who
has listened to us almost as much as I have over our years of
recording -- he makes my wrong notes sound right.
