The Sherborn Inn was filled the some faithful Sticky Wicket 'regulars' and with many Seniors bussed in from neighboring Senior Centers, including Upton, enjoying a 3-course meal and listening to really great jazz. The Eagles kicked it off in real New Orleans style with Paul Barbarin’s Second Line, and continued with an old Pop tune from 1935-36, Home. Billy Novick murmuring in low register clarinet on Wolverine Blues.
Billy Novick had a beautiful solo on alto sax on I’ll Close My Eyes, and a very special duet with Jesse. ‘nuff said!
New Orleans jazz began with spirituals. Pringle picked a forgiving one, He’ll Understand and Say Well Done. Jesse superb bowing on bass. Sam Morgan's Jazz Band recorded Bogalusa Strut in 1927. The New Black Eagle Jazz Band stayed close to the original, with Billy doing Earl Fouche’s carefree, blistering alto sax. Love Nest brought back memories of George Burns and Gracie Allen. They’re version of Memories was one of Jimmy Enright’s favorites, sweet swinging tune. I'll dedicate this to him – his birthday would have been December 1st. Red Wing was wild, with Sundstrom’s superb banjo, Reynold’s constant striking on the tom tom drum, and Jesse pushing every single beat on string bass. There were several Christmas tunes, with Tony on vocal on Blue Christmas.
They wrapped this fine afternoon up with one of their old closers, Brahm’s Lullaby. They won’t be there on the 2nd Thursday of this month, December 13th, because of the Holiday Spectacular on Sunday, December 16th. They will return as usual on January 10th, with more New Orleans Tunes. And so the vans picked up their Senior Citizens and took them back home to prepare for the Holidays. Happy Chanukah! Merry Christmas!
