Mecca of Music - the Sherborn Inn
has expanded its music schedule to include music from
Dixieland and Swing to Jazz, Pop,
and Semi-Classical. New Senior lunches twice a month on
Wednesdays. The Tuesday night Traditional/Dixieland
Jazz, and Swing continues, but Thursday Spotlight features new
bands, like Lisa Marie and All Shook Up, and this evening, for
the first time, vibes were featured at the Inn. In a salute to
Benny Goodman and Charlie Christian, Rich Goldblatt
was Red Norvo
on vibes, to John
Clark's Benny Goodman clarinet, and Eric Baldwin's Charlie Christian
guitar. They performed many of the Benny Goodman Sextet
classics, generally moving from clarinet to guitar to vibes,
skillfully backed by
the superb string bass of Stu Gunn, and drumming of Steve Taddeo,
New England's Gene Krupa. I'll Never Love Again,
Smooth One, Bugle Bounce, Dorothy Fields-Jimmy McHugh's I Can't Give
You Anything But Love, Don't Be That Way. Clark's sweet
clarinet was heard on These Foolish Things, then Get Happy.
The hot
front line on Seven Come
Eleven was a real crowd pleaser!
Rich's vibes opened Poor Butterfly and were featured on Airmail
Special, ably supported by by Stu Gunn on string bass. |

Steve Taddeo let loose on I'm Confessing That I
Love You. Usually quite and reserved, Eric stood out with
his single-line solos, using sustained and bent notes, like Charlie
Christian. He introduced an eloquent Honeysuckle Rose. I'm Gonna Love You As Long As I
Can. A wonderful rendition of Royal Garden Blues followed.
They finished with the Sheik of Araby, Rich Greenblatt's
impeccable rhythm closing the session in fine style - ending another
great evening of music at the Sherborn Inn. Stay tuned - there
will be more! |
