Blue Horizon Jazz Band
at the Sherborn Inn

Bolstered by a full
house, Stan McDonald was in rare form Tuesday.
Pianist Ross Petot, the band's prodigious pilot, started with what we wish
we all had these days, Pennies From Heaven. Jeff Stout's
powerful trumpet filled the room, followed by Stan on soprano sax,
and Gerry Gagnon on muted trombone; Al Ehrenfried beating out the
chords, Dave Bragdon keeping everyone in time. WOW! What an opener!
And this was the first time they had ever played this tune together.
Four or Five Times, Stan on vocal, first of many this evening.
I Will Do Most Anything For You fantastic clarinet backed by
piano and string bass. Stan moved to low register clarinet for a sweet I Want a
Little Girl, a tune he played with Doc Cheatham on the Jazz Boat in
the '70's.
An avid fan of Sidney Bechet, Stan named The Blue
Horizon Jazz Band after one of his songs. But he explained that even though the band is named
Blue Horizon, they never actually play that song; instead they
interpolate this one, Blues in the Air, and feature many other Sidney Bechet
tunes.
Marchand de Poisson was one of his, and Petite Fleur. Jeff
and Gerry stepped out. Stan
played this one solo, backed by the fine
rhythm section. Fabulous! |

Ross played an upbeat piano intro to There'll Be Some Changes Made.
Stan's soprano sax was flittering around Gerry's trombone like a
bumble bee. Gerry played fantastic trombone on a HOT
Mooch, then a
growling trombone on Yes, We Have No Bananas, and then
the roar of the
tiger on a fiery Tiger Rag.
Stout's trumpet went wild on Tijuana, one of Jelly Roll's tunes,
and That's a Plenty was plenty HOT! Jeff Stout
is a
professor at Berklee College of Music. He has played with Buddy Rich,
Mel Torme, Maxine Sullivan, Buddy Tate, Gary Burton, Joe Lovano,
Rosemary Clooney, Dave McKenna, and Gray Sargent. Jeff
makes a difficult and complex trumpet piece look easy.
A good deal of credit for this band goes to the rhythm section,
masters all. The ingenious Ross Petot, listening to each instrument
- and the whole aggregate, keeping it all together with a few
surreptitious piano notes; with Dave Bragdon's immaculate timing, and Al Ehrenfreid's
solid beat on an acoustic string bass. The Blue Horizon Jazz
Band has always had the finest of New England's Traditional and
Dixieland Jazz musicians.
They closed this packed Trad Jazz evening with Sleepy Time Down South
- leaving everyone craving for more. The Blue Horizon Jazz
Band has played two of the new Senior Brunches to a full house, and
regularly plays in the Sherborn Inn Tuesday Jazz program. The next one will be May 18th, then June 15th - helping
me celebrate my 75th
birthday! Marce |
