The Blue Horizon Jazz Band
at the Sherborn Inn Mardi Gras Dinner, February 21, 2012
Laissez les bons temps rouler!!
Stan McDonald's Blue Horizon Jazz Band completed Mardi Gras 2012
at the Sherborn Inn with Stan McDonald soprano sax/clarinet, Jeff
Stout trumpet, guest John Kafalas trombone, Ross Petot piano, Al
Ehrenfried acoustic string bass, Peter Gerler banjo/guitar, and
Dave Bragdon drums. They set the evening off with elements
of the second line on Bourbon Street Parade. Manager Phil Cocco was passing out colored beads.
Guest John Kafalas, who played with the band many, many, years
ago, kept his eyes on Jeff and Stan, backing them on trombone,
playing great Kid Ory solos.
Erudite drummer Dave Bragdon kept them in Trad Jazz timing, to
the point where a lady who was raised in New Orleans exclaimed "That's REAL
New Orleans Jazz!!" She was surprised to find it in New England. |

Jeff Stout's powerful trumpet on Way Down Yonder In New Orleans
is definitely an asset to the band. He's been with the Blue
Horizon Band for seven years, and understands the intricacies of its music. Al Ehrenfried bends over his double bass, you
hardly know he's there, but he is invaluably supporting Dave, providing
the appropriate chords, keeping the music fluid.
|
Eileen and Jarrod McLean, on a well-deserved night
out, really enjoyed dancing to Jelly Roll Morton's Tijuana
|
Stan's emotional, powerful soprano sax led on a
fabulous Make Me a Pallet on The Floor, or Atlanta Blues.
Stan is determined that the Blue Horizon Jazz Band
will maintain real New Orleans Classic, Traditional Jazz.

|
Ross's fingers never stop - he listens carefully to what
each member is playing, adding a few notes here and there, filling in any
spaces, comping,
suggesting some direction.
He unifies the band.
Peter did a great job preserving
the original New Orleans tradition with some fine banjo playing.
(He usually plays guitar.) Hoagie Carmichael's New
Orleans, Bechet's Marchand de Poisson, High Society, Beale St.
Blues, Basin Street, Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None of My Jelly Roll, Louis's Down in Honky Tonk Town.
|
Eileen ended this fun Mardi Gras evening parading with
a parasol in New Orleans style to an upbeat Storyville Blues.
|
We couldn't be in New Orleans, but we still had a celebratory, happy Mardi
Gras, with great jazz and all the trimmings!
The Blue Horizon Jazz Band returns on March 20th with more fine Traditional Jazz.
