If you haven't tried lunch on Wednesday at Bill's Seafood in Westbrook,
you are in for a surprise!
John Russell's "Big Easy" with Yahn Frenkel on piano, Paul Boehmke on
reeds/vocals and John Russell on drums and harmonica. Sometimes we are
honored with a vocal by Yahn. You don't want to miss the opportunity to
hear Yahn. (Yahn is the piano player for the Coast Guard.....a very fine one at that)
Last week at Bill's Seafood, festively decorated for the holidays, a fun
crowd got into the holiday spirit immediately.
We were entertained for two hours with a variety of numbers starting
with "These Foolish Things Remind Me of You ." Followed by "Tiger
Rag." Slowing it down with "I Don't Know Why I Love You Like I Do" got
the entire audience singing. Who doesn't like or know a great number?
Then it was time for Paul to sing
"Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen" also known as "The Bear Missed the Train."
Paul always puts his own twist to this one.
Now it was birthday time for Babs. "Sweethearts on Parade" was a very
fitting number for Babs. "Happy Birthday, Babs!"
Someone requested we hear a holiday song. Paul chose "Chestnuts
Roasting." A popular tune known by many. A hush came over the room.
John Russell came front and center with his harmonica while George Hunt
(a regular Wednesday patron) replaced him on drums. Whenever John
presents us his wonderful harmonica talent, George takes over John's
drums. John came thru brilliantly with "China Boy"-"Lover Come Back to
Me". (Yahn's interpretation of this number was most touching.) The
set ended with "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise." John Russell was
once again brilliant!
I love a place where everyone pretty much knows each other. Every
Wednesday is a gathering of good friends, a fine menu selection and two
hours of wonderful entertainment by the Big Easy trio.
Try it, you'll like it.
