Tom Boates & The New England All Stars

by Holly Rice

On Sunday, October 25th, the sanctuary of Christ Church in Guilford, CT, was filled with old and new jazz fans who came to hear Tom Boates and The New England All-Star Jazz Band: Fred Vigorito, Noel Kaletsky, Ross Petot, Jimmy Mazzy, Al Bernard, and Sal Ranniello,  to raise money for The Guilford High School Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra.

The group opened the first set with a rousing Rampart Street Boogie. Beale Street Blues was next with Tom singing, and the sound of Fred’s cornet reverberating throughout the church.  Strutting With Some Barbeque, Jubilee and Rose Room followed.

During Noel’s warp speed China Boy, Jimmy lost his pick and just kept on playing.  Next Jimmy sang A Closer Walk with Thee.  Milneberg Joys ended the first set.

The second set began with Jimmy and Noel doing Cake Walking Babies from Home and was followed by Ross’s beautiful Gone with the Wind. Heads were bounced and feet tapped throughout the church when Tom put on his dancing shoes and called Dr Jazz.  Then Yellow Dog Blues got the audience to jump up and wave their hands with a loud "Woo"!

Jimmy’s Where the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Day softened the mood a bit. Swing That Music was slated to be the final tune of the afternoon but a prolonged and loud standing ovation precipitated When the Saints Go Marching In.

Thanks, guys, for the great music on a glorious afternoon!
