Marissa's, 6540 Main Street, Trumbull, CT

The GJB has only an occasional engagement at Marissa's, however, when they are booked, the restaurant has a full house.....as was the case this Sunday.  The patrons enjoyed pleasing ambience and superbly prepared cuisine, while listening to great music.

The band got off on time and without Tom, Noel and Bill who were late arriving because of other jobs.  As each one made his appearance, great applause and hoots rang out.  Freddy and the rest of the guys, for a very short time, did a great job winging it.  Finally, the band was assembled.

When Freddy announced the second number Ting-a-ling, several patrons (and I) thought he said Ding-a-ling.  Whoa!

Sarah, with her booming voice, great smile, wonderful talent and her very, very New Orleans style, sang and played to the ever popular Bourbon Street Parade.  For the next selection, Sarah was once again on vocals singing Last Night on the Back Porch....for Bill (in the audience) from East Haven.  Bill was beaming!  Bill, you are quite the twinkle toes.

At last, Bill Sinclair was in his glory.  Bill loves to play boogie woogie so Fred pulled out one of his hat tricks, Kid Thomas Boogie Woogie.  Wow!  The band made a lot of music loud and clear.  Between Sarah, Tom, Noel and Russ, it was clearly the Big Band sound.  A whole lot of music going on.

Fred narrated while the band played Burgundy Street Blues.  Neat song. Sarah, once again playing her heart out and singing to the tune of  If I Die.  Sarah went wild on her sax...as only Sarah can do. Again, Savoy Blues was given the Big Band sound thanks to Roy, Noel, Tom and the rest of the band who did one heck of a job with this one.

The last selection, before the break,  was Panama.  As you know, Panama is a long number, however, the patrons were hushed giving the band all the attention they deserved.  Tom did his part with a delightful solo that brought a lingering applause.  They band was in rare form, for this one, bringing the house down with more applause.

Roy Rubinstein

We were delighted to have Roy Rubinstein with us once again.  Roy plays a mean trombone and has been playing for over 50 years.  Roy is a native of England but makes his home in Illinois as a nuclear physicist and is also the leader of his New Orleans style Chicago Hot Six.  Welcome back Roy!

When the band came back for the last set, the band played Out in the Cold Again.  Vocals by Sarah as I have never heard her sing.  Wow!  Very softly and not the norm for Sarah. Usually, she belts out a song and makes it her own.  I think Freddy was surprised she knew the words to this one. You go girl!  I might add that Tom and Art were shining here as well.  Good job!

When You Grow Too Old To Dream, 1919 (a J.P. Sousa sound,) Whenever You're Lonesome, Telephone me (sort of a 20's Rudy Valley sound,) with Noel alto sax, Sarah tenor sax and Russ baritone sax.

The great finale...The Saints...and the end to a delightful evening of music, good food and wonderful friends.

Happy Spring!!!

Jean Hadley
