Wednesday got off to a great start.
For a New England January, the
weather was bright, sunny and warm. The crowd gathered quickly and soon
the room filled to capacity.
The band was in great form, however, our dear Bill Sinclair was not to
be found. The band started without him.
Bill arrived sometime in the middle of a number, and tried desperately
to set up his keyboard. When the music stopped, Freddy gave him a hand
(as did the audience, with great applause.)
I might add that we lost Noel at the start of one number....lost but
found.
Skip Hughes, now a regular with Heartbeat,
sang many old familiar tunes that brought back a flood of memories.
Working to keep up with Skip, Bill on drums and Noel on reeds, the band
had their work cut out.
Especially fun, the band played, while Skip and Fred led selections
that encouraged the audience to exercise their vocal chords. Trust me,
this was a singing crowd.
Here are some of the great numbers that Fred pulled out of his hat.
Fred, when are you going to let the rabbit out?
Sweet Home Chicago - Scrapper Black/1928
Bye, Bye Blues - Bert Lowen/1929
You Took Advantage Of Me - Rogers/Hart 1928
Carolina In The Morning - Gus Khan/1922
Good Hearted Woman - Waylon Jennings/1972
Mack The Knife - Kurt Weill/1928
When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder - James Black/1893 (Song sung in the
1941 movie "Sergeant York"
...and so many more packed into the hour and a half. Everyone was enjoying lunch and the music. A delightful combination.
If you haven't tried a Wednesday lunch at the Yankee Clipper to hear the
Heartbeat Jazz Band, put this on your "to do" list.
