Jeff Hughes' Festival All-Stars started the final set in the Hole
in the Wall Tent, while Galvanized was in the Louis Armstrong Tent.
The All-Stars were Jeff Hughes cornet, Sherman Kahn reeds, Skip Hughes
trombone/vocals, Ross Petot piano, Bill Logozzo drums, Al Bernard
tuba (brass bass), Mike Kuehn on banjo.
They started in Chicago style,
with virtuosic solos on I Found A New Baby,
then each traded 4's with the drummer.
Sherman Kahn on clarinet, notes hitting the stratosphere!
Charlie Freeman sat at the piano
for the Artie Shaw standard Begin the Beguine. He said "It has 96 measures, 1500 notes,
and was the longest tune published before the Beatles came
along. Interesting.
Just a Gigolo started with piano and tenor sax, then the
cornet and trombone joined them for great New Orleans polyphonic ensemble. Ross Petot returned and was featured on a complex and lovely Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea.
Bill Sinclair came in on piano to back Janie on Your Sweet
Mama's Gonna Be Gone. He can pick just the right chords to
back this soloist. Skip was back on trombone, he's
indefatigable.
Mr. Bill has been playing New Orleans piano for 40 years. He
picked Sweet Sue for his specialty, with lightening fingers
playing multiple strains, and congenially giving Albie Bernard a
chance to display his fine tuba.
Suddenly, there was a deafening sound of When The Saints Go Marching In
coming from the back of the tent!
Fred Vigorito leading on trumpet,
followed by Bob Price on banjo, Russ Whitman clarinet, Art Hovey and
his black tuba, Ben Griffin's vibrant trombone, and the rest of the
Galvanized Jazz Band and all the fans from the Louis Armstrong Tent
came marching down the middle aisle.
It was cacophony! The band marched up onto the stage with
the All-Stars, while the fans squeezed in together in the seats.
Bob Price grabbed a microphone, singing Happy Trails To
You (?) ... A stunned Jeff Hughes
graciously stepped back, out of the way. It was a riot!
