Seacoast Stompers

at the Acton Jazz Cafe, December 3, 2011

Scott Philbrick, Lee Prager, Bobby Reardon

The Seacoast Stompers played to another full house at the Acton Jazz Café on this bright, sunny December afternoon. Frank Stadler - piano and leader, Jimmy Mazzy - banjo and vocals. Bob McHenry - bass, Scott Philbrick - cornet, Lee Prager - trombone, Bobby Reardon - drums, Craig Ball - clarinet.

Members of the band are taking turns being 'Band Director' - this month it was Scott Philbrick's turn.  Which was probably why Jimmy had so many vocals!  My kind of afternoon.  And Craig Ball was moved to the right, joining the trombone and cornet in the front line.

Jimmy had vocals on Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Dinah, When I Grow Too Old to Dream.  Bob McHenry picked a tune, It Had to be You, sweet and very danceable, fabulous piano, with nice take out by Bob on string bass.

They played Tiger Rag for Barbara on her birthday at the Acton Jazz Cafe.  Lee Prager was the tiger on trombone.

Barbara and Bill drive down from New Hampshire to hear the Seacoast Stompers.

Fantastic ensemble on Beale St., trombone adding some vibrato.  Jim playing his single string banjo, and vocal on Everybody Love My Baby, fine string bass and drum solos.  These two are really in sync!  Cornet sneaking in a bit of It Ain't Got a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing.

Carrie Mazzy came up for a nice vocal on I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas.   Jimmy was featured on a beautiful ballad, Funny, also known as Not Much. Another great danceable tune.

Jimmy did a nice rendition of this 1923 tune by Vincent Rose and Harry Owens  Linger Awhile

Bob McHenry's magnificent string bass is always right there!!

Craig Ball moved back to his usual position next to the piano, took out a soprano sax, for Sax Man. This is the first time we've ever heard him play one.  Amazing.

We've been listening to Jimmy's vocal of Porter's Love Song to a Chambermaid for 40 years and it's still great.  For proper effect, both cornet and trombone were muted.

Scotty took the vocal on Ol' Rocking Chair's Got Me

Bobby Reardon took the intro on San, and he was smoking!

It's a fun afternoon - they move right along!

Eva Belazs, pianist for the New New Orleans Jazz Band, was back sitting near the piano where she could watch Frank.

He did the piano intro to a peppy June Night,

Then the band went into medium tempo for Rose Room, before getting into a really HOT finish with Fidgety Feet.

And it was over for another month. Too soon.  This afternoon just flies!!

But they'll return next year, January 7th, with the same fantastic group!! Check out the Flyer. See you then.
