Amoskeag Strummers and Red Suspenders
The
Amoskeag Strummers
from New Hampshire with
Royce Riddle, Walter Chase, Russ Miller and Tom Fee banjos, Buzz Cote trumpet,
Joan Cornett spoons, and Arlene Boucher vocals, were joined by Albie
Bernard on tuba and Eric Anderson on trombone. This is one of
our favorite banjo bands, capable of balancing complex harmonies,
melodies and syncopation.
Arlene sang a version
of Tomorrow - not the Little Orphan Annie version!.
Russ Miller sang on
At the Cod Fish Ball with some well timed help from Albie on tuba.
You're Driving Me Crazy. Arlene Boucher continued with
I
Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me. Benefiting
from a rich and sweet voice, she really
feels the music, understands the words, and portrays them with a passion. Joan
is always on
smiles and encouragement, and sometimes on spoons. |
Steve Caddick's Red Suspenders |
In the fall of
1969, Rev. Bob Ryder started a banjo band, and Steve Caddick joined
him, playing tenor for 28 years. After Bob passed away in 1998,
Steve reformed the band as the "Red Suspenders." He has been the
leader of that group ever since. Steve Caddick's Red Suspenders with Steve
on tenor banjo, Paul Gookin tenor
sax, Rene Marion guitar, Gary Richard and Jim Haas; one of the best
bands this evening, played San Francisco Bay Blues, and All By Myself.
Paul was featured on sax with Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives To
Me, and moved to washboard for Dr. Jazz. Steve did the intro for a fantastic
Avalon, then took off like a house on fire! With
lightening dexterity, he played multiple forceful variations on the banjo,
and made it look easy. Marvelous!
