Seacoast Stompers raise the roof - again- at the Acton Jazz Café

with three very special substitutes!

Noel Kaletsky alto sax, Dave Whitney tpt, Steve Piermarini tbn

WOW!  Seacoast Stompers with subs Noel Kaletsky clarinet, alto & soprano sax, Dave Whitney trumpet, Steve Piermarini trombone, joined regulars Frank Stadler piano, Scott Philbrick guitar, cornet, banjo, Bob McHenry string bass, and Bobby Reardon drums at the AJC for some Roaring Hot Jazz!

Jimmy Mazzy was at the Summit Jazz Festival in Denver Colorado with the Wolverine Jazz Band, so for most of the numbers, Scotty moved to guitar, which is actually his favorite instrument.  He and Noel go way back, and they couldn't resist getting in some hot licks with a four-piece front line.  Marvelous!

I'll Be Your Friend with Pleasure is a Dave Whitney special, the guys challenging each other to see who could sneak in the most snippets.  They were having a ball!

Stephen Smith at the mic

Vocalist Stephen Smith came up for several tunes during the afternoon - nice voice. I Can't Get Started,  I'm Confessing That I Love You, Pennies From Heaven, I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Am I Blue, Sunny Side of the Street.

Swing That Music was WILD, Scotty picked up his cornet, Noel on soprano sax, recalling their hot jazz nights with John Sheehan's Heritage Jazz Band.  Here we had a four-piece front line with trumpet, cornet, soprano sax and trombone. Piermarini was on fire!   WOW!  Backed by  Bob McHenry on string bass, and Bobby Reardon, with more of a Krupa drum set, much different sound than his Trad/Dixieland Jazz set, and perfect for this swinging afternoon.

four piece front line Pieranini's eyes blazing

Dave Whitney had the vocal on Hoagie Carmichael's New Orleans.  Fabulous ensemble!   Everybody Loves My Baby, C Jam Blues, Singing the Blues.  We're back to a  four-piece front line with China Boy.   Noel moved to clarinet for I Got Rhythm, that made Frank Stadler happy.  I think he expected some kind of substitute for Craig Ball's clarinet.  But this is jazz - expect the unexpected.

Fortunately for us, Harold McAleer had his trusty video camera with him.

Eva Balazs & Frank Stadler

Kathleen & Sofia Harlow

Eva Balazs, marvelous pianist with the New New Orleans Jazz Band, was enjoying this fine music, sitting by Frank Stadler playing the AJC's new 6'1" Baldwin Grand Piano .

Kathleen Harlow and daughter Sofia enjoyed the Swing.  Kathleen was swinging at the Sticky Wicket when she was 12 years old.  As Kathleen M. Howland, Ph.D. she maintains a private practice in music and speech therapy and is an Adjunct Faculty member of the Boston Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, Boston University and Lesley University.  (She also plays a wild bari sax, and produced a fine CD called My Private Affair, with Noel Kaletsky, Jimmy Mazzy and Scott Philbrick accompanied by Ed Metz Sr., Roger Munnell, Al Bernard, Bill Reynolds and Bill Whitcraft.)

There was a request for Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans, great vocal by Dave Whitney.  Scotty on banjo left us breathless with a flamboyant Limehouse Blues.  The man has immeasurable talent!  Then back to the guitar to slow things down a bit with James P. Johnson's Old Fashioned Love

Noel was featured on clarinet with Fred Waring's 1934 Sleep.   The powerful four-piece front line closed this great  afternoon with Sweet Georgia Brown.

The Seacoast Stompers will return with their very capable 'regular' musicians, and more great jazz and swing, on November 5th. See you there!
