Seacoast Stompers at the Acton Jazz Café

October 2, 2010            Videos by Harold McAleer

cornet & bari sax front, drum, string bass in back

Frank Stadler - Leader and piano, Jimmy Mazzy - banjo and vocal, Scott Philbrick - cornet, John Clark - reeds, Bob McHenry - acoustic string bass, Steve Taddeo - drums.

This was Traditional Jazz played with a passion by very dedicated and talented musicians, with each player having his say but  listening carefully and responding to what his peers were playing.  Steve Taddeo's drums were moved to the center back, with the Bob's string bass at his left; and Jimmy to his right-front; they are a remarkable, pulsating, rhythm section.  John Clark, on clarinet and monstrous bass saxophone (propped up on a chair) was subbing for both Craig Ball, reeds and Lee Prager's trombone.  He was having fun inventing, testing the band, and vice versa.  They were having a ball.  So were we!

Bob McHenry described his feeling for the audience:

"Very gratifying to see such a positive audience response (which  has been pretty much in evidence all along.) Also very gratifying  (and  interesting) to have such a dedicated following from people who really enjoy  that genre of music.

Many say it is 'uplifting" for them - sometimes coming  in feeling pretty "down" and always leaving "feeling good". Can't ask for  more than that, and it certainly energizes US to want to continue playing music that people enjoy listening to and like to hear.  For US, that's what playing music is all about!"

Jimmy Mazzy sings most of the tunes with the Seacoast Stompers, and we're sitting right up close.  Eat your heart out, Europe!!

Bighearted Hal McLeer's video lets you, and the world, watch this Teagarden classic .....A Hundred Years From Today.  Sotiri and Amy are dazzling dancers.  It's a pleasure to watch them - and they love this music!

Scotty played a wa-wa wailing cornet backing Jimmy's WPA Blues"Everbody's working in this town, working night and day, ......for the WPA.  They're going to tear my house down, crew from the WPA."

Jimmy played a simple verse solo-banjo on Washington Square, introducing his soul-mate Carrie Mazzy on vocal.

Leader Frank Stadler called 95% of the tunes very FAST.   Scotty, on electrically-charged cornet, slipped Gypsy into Stomping at the Savoy, Chasing Rainbows into Crazy Rhythm, Battle Hymn of the Republic into New Orleans.  John ended that one in a bass-sax coda that just about hit the Richter scale!

Taddeo's drumming was amazing, even cross-sticking like Johnny Dodds in Everybody Loves My Baby.
