Seacoast Stompers at the Acton Jazz Cafe

with Dave Whitney trumpet, and Bobby Reardon drums

The Seacoast Stompers played to standing room only at the Acton Jazz Cafe on Saturday, March 5th.  Craig Ball clarinet, Frank Stadler leader/piano, Lee Prager trombone, Bob McHenry string bass, Scott Philbrick on cornet, guitar and banjo.  Filling in for Jimmy Mazzy, he was supposed to be playing banjo, but an injured hand made that difficult.

So we might want to call this the Seacoast Swing and Blues Band - with no Jimmy Mazzy, the band soared aloft into a new direction.   Leader Frank Stadler even refrained from their usual start-up with There'll Be Some Changes Made. It foretold  three swinging hours coming up, with a couple of 'sweet substitutes' Dave Whitney trumpet, and Bobby Reardon on drums.

The four-piece front line took off  swinging, buoyed by the rhythm section; Bob McHenry's string bass, pushing the beat but never racing the time.  Bobby Reardon's steady beat provided a reassuring foundation for the band, his rim-tapping accents and cymbals were just right.

Our ambassador of jazz trumpet, Dave Whitney, added some vocals, I've Got The World On A String,  Hello Central, Give Me Dr. Jazz, Scott playing guitar, making it sound like a banjo.

Craig was featured on Love Is Just Around The Corner, with cornet, trumpet and trombone harmonizing in the background;   Scott and Dave in a spontaneous give and take conversation, Lee enjoying every minute of it, he couldn't stand still!

Stealing Apples, Fats Waller's tune made famous by Benny Goodman, was absolutely WILD - and they were just getting warmed up.  Recalling the old Chicago days, piano started with Benny Goodman's Sugar. Fine ensemble, great clarinet solo, Craig can really hit that high register.  Whitney's vocal nicely backed by Scott on guitar, sneaking in a bit of I'll Take Manhattan.

With Scotty on a couple of banjo tunes, the remaining 3-piece front line was able to concentrate on Classic Jazz.

Whitney on muted trumpet with Sweet Georgia Brown,  with banjo, string bass and drum, followed by  fantastic trombone solo, then Dave on trumpet, sneaking in Stumbling.

Dave was asked to pick a tune, and he chose Limehouse Blues. (Thank you very much!)  Pulsating string bass,  Reardon stroking the beat. Scott strumming away on banjo. Clarinet and trombone free to fly! Dave again sneaking in Stumbling in his hot solo,  Love it!

Scott back on cornet for Ain't Gonna Give You None Of My Jelly Roll, Dave & Lee (on muted trombone) trading 4's.  Marvelous, tight, ensemble.  Frank's fine piano solo getting applause.

Changing pace, Frank called for a 'straight blues', leading with something really blue,  Back o' Town Blues, Craig high up in the hemisphere, trombone was almost crying.  Then about face with an upbeat blues, Blue Lu.

Wrap Your Trouble In Dreams, Scott back on guitar, Dave sneaking in I Love You Porgy in his fine solo.  Guitar and string bass playing in sync. Fabulous.

Dave and Lee stepped aside to let Craig take Lady Be Good with the rhythm section in stop chorus behind him. Stepping back in with dazzling ensemble, somebody would hit a few notes, and like birds in flight, the rest of the band turned and followed.  Amazing improvisation - they never knew where they were going next, but backed by solid, steady beat, they did it - with class.  I love this music!

Bobby likes playing Dixieland/Trad, Swing,  makes the spread soft, controlling volume, blending with the ensemble. He will be the new drummer for the Stompers starting in April.

Bobby Reardon has also been in the house band at the Kowloon Restaurant on Rt. 1 in Saugus, Friday and Saturday nights for the last 22 years.

According to jazz fans Lynn & Bob, it's the best Chinese restaurant there is, bar none. Kowloon Restaurant,  948 Broadway, Saugus, MA 01906-3299 (781) 233-0077.

Strutting With Some Barbecue started with more fine ensemble, with Scotty on cornet, 4-piece front line, each taking a solo and challenging each other interpolating innumerable tunes, having fun. Too many for me to catch!

Approaching the finale, Scotty took the vocal on Dance Around In Your Bones.

Lee opened the final tune with tailgate trombone intro into Basin Street. Scotty was back on banjo. Dave sneaking in We'll Meet Again.  Lee on hot, growling trombone.  Great ending to an exciting afternoon.

Jimmy Will be back here at the Acton Jazz Cafe with the Seacoast Stompers on April 2nd - I can't wait to hear what they will do next!!
