Seacoast Stompers

at the Acton Jazz Café , August 7, 2010

The Seacost Stompers celebrated their 2nd anniversary of exhilarating, foot-tapping, Dixieland Jazz at the Acton Jazz Café on August 7th.  Craig Ball was not available, so instead of his high "Artie Shaw" clarinet notes they shifted to the low, low tones of a bass saxophone, the latest instrument taken up by reedman John Clark.  It's almost as big as he is!   Pictures and videos by Hal McAleer..

They started with the usual At The Jazz Band Ball, which was very different from the usual!!

That ain't no trombone!  John Clark on the big bass sax emulates Teagarden on this classic. Frank Stadler -  piano and leader, Scott Philbrick - horn , John Clark - reeds, Jimmy Mazzy - banjo, Bob McHenry - bass, Steve Taddeo - drums.

Frank Newcomb said Benny Goodman would have been proud to hear John's clarinet version of Stealing Apples!!

Jimmy Mazzy fans love this - he gets to sing many songs at the AJC.  I Ain't Got Nobody, I Would Do Most Anything For You, Love Is Just Around the Corner.  His banjo introduced a rarity - Take Your Tomorrow and Give Me Today.  From Monday On - A sweet rendition of this Bix classic with  vocal by Jimmy Mazzy, You Tube

Bass sax intro for the first chorus of Wabash Blues, shades of Giordano!!  Scotty replying with myriad cornet notes.  Jimmy interjecting a snippet of If I Could Be With You. Taddeo lightly tapping closed cymbal. Scotty recalled Bubber Miley's mesmerizing wa wa muted cornet for most of Washington Square. Drummer Steve Taddeo even took a vocal on After You've Gone.  Fun afternoon! Gut-Bucket bass player Dave First and his wife Nancy had a perfect view centered at the bar.

Carrie Mazzy took the vocal on Ma, He's Making Eyes At Me, ending with a sweet duet with hubby Jimmy.  Scott lead Fidgety Feet with John on clarinet flickering all around him like a bumble bee.  Bob added a fine string bass solo on Nagasaki,  played especially for Wil Smith, noted photographer and avid jazz fan, and also on I''ve Got The World On a String.  It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing - Frank had that piano swinging!!

They closed the afternoon with a sweet Jimmy Mazzy vocal on I'll Be Your Friend with Pleasure and San.

We love jazz in the afternoon, especially a bright sunny August day like this! The Seacoast Stompers will begin their 3rd year at the Acton Jazz Café next month, on September 11th because of Labor Day, with a 7-piece band including Craig Ball clarinet and Lee Prager trombone.   See you there.
