All That Brass,
Thursday Spotlight at the Sherborn was a fun program, with a
Tribute to Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, and some Jazz thrown in.
All That Brass was named after a TV program in 1967, where Herb
Alpert had Louis Armstrong with him. This version had Dave Whitney and Paul Monat,
trumpets,
Dave Lindsey trombone, Steve Dale piano, Eric Baldwin
guitar,
Dave Le Bleu electric bass, and Reid Jorgensen, drums.
Dave Whitney put this program together from many of the original Herb
Alpert Books, including the Whipped Cream 45 that he's
had since he was a teenager. Herb was known to take Pop tunes and
transform them
into the Tijuana Brass Style.
Lonely Bull from the
album of the same name, started it all in1962. Nice bass on What Now My Love by LeBleu, with Paul on
maracas.
Spanish Flea was fantastic, and really brought back fond memories of the Tijuana
Brass!
The band took a jazz detour featuring Dave Whitney on Louis' All Stars
1940s, The
Gypsy, nice dance tune, with Dave Whitney trumpet and vocals,
great piano by
Steve Dale. Steve often does the arrangements for the band.
He was featured on an
instrumental hit of the 60's, A Walk in the Black Forest,
with Lindsey on viber flapper?? |

Paul took the lead in Mae, with Dave playing harmony.
Nice!
Moving into Dixieland style, Wall St. Rag, from the 1966 SRO album,
especially for this Dixieland crowd. Then Dave did a couple of shorts, singing in his own inimitable
style, Bring Me Sunshine. and a tune from the Yankee Rhythm Kings,
Friendless Blues. Dave and Paul were the
two trumpets with Bob Connor's Yankee Rhythm Kings, an East-Coast
two-beat band at the Scotch & Sirloin in in the 1970's in Boston
(and we were there.) They had us dancing in the back of the
New York Life Hall too. Folks would request "Let the little
guy sing one!" Great band, and we still miss it.
They played a special for Cinco de Mayo,
with a nice touch - Dave
Lindsey (trombone) rendering authentic lyrics to Besame Mucho in Spanish.
Also from the SRO album, the original version of Mame, Eric Baldwin
excelling on guitar.
His
solo on The Girl from Ipanema was excellent.
Eric was heavily influenced by guitarist Charlie
Christian. He was featured on an A&M recording of Wes Montgomery's Watch What
Happens. |

Tijuana Taxi brought back many happy memories! Pretty tune
on 1963 Vol. 2 with early mariachi sound, Winds of Barcelona. Got a Lotta Living To Do.
Dave on vocal, and from Herb Alpert's 9th - A
Banda featured Reid
Jorganson, with some amazing drumming!
Paul changed horns. There's a limit to how long he can ignore Wild Bill - it was time.
He gave us a heartfelt version Wild Bill Davison's famous
Blue and Broken Hearted
Back to All That Brass - one of their biggest hits, Taste of
Honey, 1964, with many stops and goes. Steve Dale arrangement of the
1969 Good Morning Mr. Sunshine, turning into a jazz waltz.
Acapulco had the two horns
in sync, with Paul also whistling. No end to his talent!
Approaching the finale, a swinger arrangement of the mid 60's made
famous by Jack Jones, Lollipops and Roses, also on the
Whipped Cream album - with tremendous trombone by Dave Lindsey.
Herb had another big hit in1968, Burt Bacharach's The Guy's In Love
With You. Says Dave, "The Boy Singer gets to do the final
vocal because
he put the band together!" .
Herb Alpert is now 76, married to vocalist Lani Hall, and still
performing. He is mostly associated with
Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, but he is also a recording industry executive — he is the "A" of A&M Records (a recording label he and business partner Jerry Moss founded and eventually sold). Alpert's musical accomplishments include five number one hits, twenty-eight albums on the Billboard charts, eight Grammy Awards, fourteen Platinum albums and fifteen Gold albums. As of 1996, Alpert had sold 72 million albums worldwide.
Thank you all for bringing back those warm memories! Great
job! Marce, March 12,
