The Wednesday Senior Luncheon at the Sherborn Inn has skyrocketed with bus-loads of Senior Citizens from area towns enjoying excellent food and great music.   Bo Winiker trumpet and vocals, Bill Winiker drums, Neil Green piano, were joined this afternoon by vocalist Estelle Katz.

They quickly set the tone of the afternoon with an upbeat  Alexander's Ragtime Band, then softened with Estelle's Embraceable You, and Bo with When You're Smiling.

Bo explained that the Winiker boys were raised just a few miles from here in Millis, on a tremendous poultry farm.  Their Father was a professional piano player in the evenings and Mother played bass.  One person in the audience recalled the Winiker Band playing at his High School Prom in 1959! The boys were 'whipped into shape' by the age of 10 and 13 and joined the Band.  They loved it, and have been playing every since, for over 45 years.  Estelle keeps busy - she's a Selectwomen, Psychologist, and Vocalist!

The Winikers play all kinds of music, but pleased this audience with Hello Dolly, Bo doing a fine imitation of Louis Armstrong. Estelle singing Frank Sinatra's poignant Second Time Around, also It Had To Be You, Honeysuckle Rose, and a real Red Hot Mama on St. Louis Blues.

They touched on My Fair Lady, Patsy Kline,  Fats Waller, W. C. Handy.   Bo took out a strange instrument called a melonica for a unique Moon River; it looks like a big harmonica, sounds like an accordion, but is played by blowing through a tube.  Versatile musician, he played spine tingling trumpet on Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White, and It Only Takes a Moment on flugelhorn, superbly backed by Bill's drumming and Cousin Neil Green's piano.  No matter what they played, Neil was right there with them. It was never dull!!

Folks have really enjoyed these luncheons.  The three-course meal changes every week, and is definitely not sandwiches.  This week, Chef Paul Walsh of Johnson & Wales served salad, choice of Chicken Piccata or Salmon, and apple crisp a la mode for desert.   After this scrumptious meal, Bo lead the full house in a rowdy sing-a-long, Take Me Out To The Ball Game, The Saints, Give Me That Old Time Religion, everybody's arms waving in the air - Halleluiah!!  The afternoon ended with Bo singing passionately, his eyes tightly closed, every chorus of Sesame Street's Rainbow Connection:

"Why are there so many songs about rainbows?
That's part of what rainbows do.
Rainbows are memories, sweet dream reminders --
What is it you'd like to do?
All of us watching and wishing we'd find it,
I know you're watching it, too.
Someday you'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and you!"

This was only the second Senior Luncheon at the Sherborn Inn, there are many more to come, and some are already sold out!  Send email to gm@sherborninn.com for reservations, or call 508-655-9521. The next one is April 14th with Stan McDonald's Blue Horizon Jazz Band, and the Winiker Band will return on April 28th.
