JAZZ SPECTACULAR
at the Sherborn Inn
by Marce

Craig Ball went wild with Benny Goodman's
Corner Pocket, with Ross Petot on piano, Jimmy Mazzy banjo/vocals,
Dave Bragdon drums. Everybody loves Jimmy, and his inimitable scatting, on Kicking
the Gong Around.
Craig said: "Jim is
my bosom buddy; he is the anchor of Traditional Jazz in New
England".
(Craig often sits in as one of Jimmy's "Last
Minute Men" at the Colonial on Wednesday evenings.) |
Stan McDonald stepped up for Rose of the Rio Grande.
Joyful Noise indeed!
The band continued with Who's Sorry Now, followed by my favorite, Limehouse Blues. |
Deb Larkin and hubby Jeff Stout collaborated on a
great Billie Holliday tune, Fine and Mellow, backed by Ross's piano
ingenuity, and a stirring string bass
solo by Stu Gunn. |

At Intermission,
The
Mood Elevators
gave us a brief nostalgic preview of their date here on March 2nd.

Jeff Hughes had the last set on cornet, with Jeff
Stout trumpet; Gerry Gagnon on tuba, Dave MacMillan on guitar.
Ross Petot was featured with our wonderful rhythm section, a BG
traditional, Don't Be That Way
|
. Robin Verdier, leader
of the Monte Carlo Jazz Ensemble, was called up for some fine
stride piano, with Tom Boates on trombone while Gerry Gagnon moved
to the tuba. Jon Clark on bari sax, Jeff on cornet, Craig Ball
clarinet, Dave MacMillan guitar, Jimmy banjo, Dave Bragdon drums,
Stu Gunn string bass. WOW! Fantastic group!
Jimmy had the vocal on I Love My Sunday Girl and the they
followed with a scorching That's a Plenty. |
Deb returned with a moving "I've Got My Love to Keep Me
Warm." With the evening coming to a close, she
reminded us of the upcoming holiday with a warm, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, backed
by hubby Jeff Stout.
Then everybody got into the act with Dippermouth Blues with Stan McDonald
holding his own between two clarinets. It was Wild!!
Sadly, we said goodbye to Jazz at the Sherborn Inn
for the rest of 2009.

This was the first Spectacular event that Ellen McDonald has
been allowed to present in five years. Like all her endeavors, it
was outstanding! Many thanks from all of us, Ellen, and Thank You
Phil Cocco, for making it happen. We anticipate more great
Traditional and Dixieland Jazz, and other fine music in 2010!
Back to the beginning.
