Stone Street Strummers 18th Annual Spring Fling 2010

SSS 2010

The Stone Street Strummers 18th annual Banjo Fling was attended by many bands and eager banjo devotees and fan-atics from all over the East Coast.  The Fling included three days of organized jams, Friday evening workshops, Saturday's Gala All-Star Show, with more jamming afterwards, culminating in a Sunday morning Gospel Jam & Sing Along run by Tom Fee, and an Afterglow Jam Session.   It was a fun weekend.

Jim & Geri Rheel gave an inspiring performance Saturday morning in the Lounge area. They also put on a work shop for Beginners and Intermediates that was well received by all who attended.

The other workshop was Mike Hashem's on "How to play banjo in a group", ie: when to start, stop, solo or not etc.  Mike speaks from 40 years of experience!

Friday afternoon featured the Dixie Diehards with Dolly Fruzetti vocals, performing a Dixieland Jazz Concert.

The Saturday Gala All-Star Show showcased Traditional Jazz, Dixieland, and old fashioned Tin Pan Alley hits presented by many bands including The Stone Street Strummers, Elm St Banjo Band.  Amoskeag Strummers,  Steve Caddick's Red SuspendersGoodtime QuintetThe Vitales,   Sweeney's Reunion Band, Jeff Grosser & Eric Anderson, Cabaret Strings, Paul Monat & Mel Deveau, Ray Alotta Tribute Band, Bay State Stompers and last but not least, The Yum Yums.

The Strummers started the afternoon with a welcoming medley, Hello Hello, Enjoy Yourself, and Welcome from Cabaret.  Then they played a song that Tom Fee wrote So Many Tunes And So Little Time.

Tom Fee has been with the Stone Street Strummers since 1983, and Director for 15 years.

A natural leader, he ensures quality acts at every Stone Street Strummers Spring Fest.

He keeps the afternoon Concert moving at a lively pace (each act has 12 minutes) showcasing the many talents of these fine musicians. It never gets boring, especially with the Yo Yo's - or this year, the Yum Yums.

Fine tenor saxophonist, Paul Gookin, wore many hats, from Steve Caddick's Red Suspenders, to the Amoskeag Strummers, Goodtime Quintet, Bay State Stompers.   A multi-instrument virtuoso, he is as adept on guitar, banjo and washboard as he is on clarinet and tenor sax.

A Sunday morning gospel jam hosted by Tom Fee rounded out the weekend.  All performances at the Early Spring Banjo Fling are free and open to the public.  These musicians are friendly competitors, and enjoy mixing and matching in different groups.   It was a fun afternoon!  (The wives enjoy 3 days of shopping at the nearby Wrentham Outlets.)  Everybody has a good time at the Banjo Fling!.

Next year's Fling April 14-17, 2011, again at the Holiday Inn for the same rate.
